Salary: £44,487 per annum, pro rata (0.5 FTE). Fixed term for 12 months  

 

The Leo Baeck Institute London is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to conduct research on the intersections and entanglements between German-Jewish and British history, including the British Empire, with a specific topic of their choosing. This is a 0.5 FTE position, lasting one year. 

 

Role Description: 

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the understanding of cultural, social, and intellectual exchanges between German-Jewish emigrants and British society, particularly in the context of migration, exile, and the aftermath of the Holocaust. This role aims to enhance the profile and scope of the Institute’s activities and encourage new collaborations, publications, and outreach initiatives. The researcher will also be affiliated with Birkbeck, University of London, as an Honorary Research Fellow. 

 

About the Institute: 

The Leo Baeck Institute London is a research institute devoted to the study of German-Jewish history, focusing particularly on the period from the 19th century to the present day. As the leading institution in its field, the institute holds a collection of primary sources, providing researchers with resources for exploring the history of German-speaking Jewry in Europe. In addition to its archival holdings, the institute hosts lectures, seminars, and exhibitions, encouraging dialogue amongst academics, students, and the wider public. The LBI London is committed to expanding access to its collections and promoting scholarly inquiry into German-Jewish history and culture.

The Leo Baeck Institute London offers internships of varying length to students specialising in German-Jewish studies or a related field. Interns will assist with the daily operations of the institute, support public events, contribute to outreach activities, and undertake research and translation tasks. This internship provides hands-on experience in an academic setting and the chance to build meaningful professional connections in the field of German-Jewish studies.

The LBI offers supervision and support throughout the internship, covers transport costs, contributes towards expenses, and provides a letter of recommendation upon completion of the placement. Knowledge of basic digital skills is essential. German language skills are an advantage but not compulsory.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong research skills and attention to detail to support the Director of EHRI-UK in the day-to-day running of the UK Holocaust Research Infrastructure (https://www.ehri-uk.org). Reporting directly to the EHRI-UK Director, the successful candidate will liaise with EHRI-UK partners, organise meetings and events, undertake research tasks relating to EHRI-UK’s work, administer the EHRI-UK Regional Placement Scheme, update social media, and other related tasks. The successful candidate will be employed by the Wiener Holocaust Library but will work remotely. There will be some travel within the UK (and possibly Europe).

The Wiener Holocaust Library (WHL) is the world’s oldest Holocaust archive and the home of Britain’s largest collection of published and unpublished works, documents and photographs relating to the Nazi era. The WHL is a key founding partner of EHRI-UK, which seeks to improve access to Holocaust-related collections throughout the UK, provide national Fellowships for scholars and heritage practitioners, and placements for graduate students at UK archival institutions. The EHRI-UK national node links UK collections and people networks to the newly founded, permanent body of the European Research Infrastructure Consortium for Holocaust research (EHRI-ERIC), https://www.ehri-project.eu/).

EHRI-UK is working to improve access to Holocaust related collections throughout the UK, provide national Fellowships for scholars and heritage practitioners, and placements for graduate students at UK archival institutions. The EHRI-UK national node links UK collections and people networks to the newly founded, permanent body of the European Research Infrastructure Consortium for Holocaust Research (EHRI-ERIC), https://www.ehri-project.eu/). The EHRI-UK Director is also currently the Chair of the National Coordinators’ Committee, one of the two governing bodies of the EHRI-ERIC, there may also be tasks relating to this role that will be undertaken by the successful candidate.
